520			_aResearch activities carried out on the coconut mite are reported upon. Investigations on coconut mite control carried out by IICA are based on the effect of rainfall and chemicals on the mite and an examination of fertilizer on mite damage. In undertaking the research activities, IICA developed a standard method to assess coconut mite damage. The method is quick, simple and easy to use. It is based on McKinney's formula for Disease Indexing. The document emphasizes that chemical control of mite was also an important aspect of this study. Low toxic chemicals were applied by spraying the bunches. Results indicate that fertilizer does not control coconut mite. Perhaps good nutrition can increase the plant's ability to withstand mite attack. Finally, it appears that many factors affect coconut mite damage. Banana spray oil has proven effective but more work is required on biological control, agronomic practices and use of tolerant varieties. (MIBA)
