520 _aFive low density wood species. Cecropia peltata. Heliocarpus donell-smithii, Ochroma lagopus. Schizolobium parahyba and Spondias nombin from Belize, were examined to determine their suitability for the production of paper making pulps. Wood density, fibre dimensions and chemical composition of the wood species are reported. Each species individually and a mixture of all five species in equal parts by weight were pulped by the sulphate process and bleached by a three stage process of successive applications of chlorine, sodium hydroxide and calcium hypochlorite. The mixture, pulped using 20 per cent effective alkali, yielded 49 per cent of pulp. This pulp, when bleached, had a brightness of 72 (EEL blue filter) and strength characteristics suitable for writing and printing papers. The results of the pulping by cold soda and neutral sulphite semi-chemical processes are reported
