Goats can ingest twice as much dry matter per kg of liveweight as cattle. Therefore they can thrive on a pure browse diet, while cattle cannot. Feeding value of browse is examined. Plantation of fodder shrubs and trees as feed reserves is examined as part of a drough evasion strategy in arid and semi-arid zones. The main shrubs and trees reviewed are spineless cati, salt bushes, Acacia, Leucaena, Mesquites, etc. Planting techniques and cost of establishment are briefly overviewed. As a conclusion, the author stresses the need for a better cooperation between various specialists and agencies in order to plan and carry out sounder and better balanced development schemes based upon long term sustained productivity
