All of the bioecological problems on the farm, such as pest and disease outbreaks and soil and water degradation, can be solved and prevented by means of fine tuning of the design and management of the agroecosystem, and by taking into account all long-term and distant outcomes. This approach is contrasted with short-term, curative efficient use and input substitution strategies, which invariably fail confront the causes of problems. Examples will be used to illustrate this thesis
