The Agroforestry Project is designed to have a dual purpose: first to generate alternative and supplementary sources of income for small-scale farmers through the introduction of multipurpose, commercial tree species. Secondly reduce erosion, provide shade, and beautify the landscape with new plantings. Additionally, as the project is being implemented through local collaborating organizations, it will build expertise and create a resource base for continued work at the local level beyond the time frame of the project. Three key objectives are to be met: 1) to establish new nursery production facilities on a community level, or supplement existing ones; 2) to plant one or more agroforestry demonstration sites on each island; and 3) to put in place an outreach programme to make contact with innovative farmers already applying agroforestry practices, and identify farmers and other people in the communities interested in tree planting.
