Esta investigación se realizó en una empresa forestal en la Reserva de la biosfera Maya en Petén, Guatemala. Se determinó, por medio del índice de desempeño, las fortalezas y retos enfrentados en el proceso de certificación del manejo del bosque y cadena de custodia (CdC) de la industria. Asimismo, se determinó la rentabilidad financiera mediante análisis parcial, de la adopción, implementación y mantenimiento de estos dos tipos de certificación. También, se probó, validó y adaptó el software conocido como CdeC para el procesamiento y análisis de información del manejo del bosque y la industria según los estándares del Forest Stewarship Council (FSC) y los procedimientos de la empresa para los sistemas CdC. Debido a la certificación forestal, la empresa mejoró su desempeño ambiental, social, económico, administrativo y los procedimientos de registro y control en la industria. El sotfware CdC facilitó la integración, procesamiento y análisis de información del manejo del bosque e industrialización de los productos, especialmente por la flexibilidad encontrada en el sistema.

This study was carried out on a forestry company in the Mayan Biosphere Reserve, Petén, Guatemala. By means of the performance index, the strengths and challenges faced in the process of certification of the management of the forest and the Chain of Custody (CoC) of the industry were determined. The financial profitability was determined through partial analysis of the adoption, implementation and maintenance of these two certification types. The forestry software program CdeC was tested, validated and adapted for the processing and analysis of information of the management of the forest and the company, according to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the proceedings of the CoC system. Due to the results of the certification process, the company has improved its environmental, social, economic and administrative performance and the registration control procedures in the industry. The CdeC software facilitated the integration, processing and analysis of information for the management of the forest and the industrialization of their products, especially due to the flexibility found in the system.
