Programa de Investigación Logros de la investigación para el nuevo milenio. ActasResumen: A simple weed scouting method was designed for group participatory IPM training. In 50 circular quadrats (diameter 35 cm) along a zigzag route, farmers observe total weed cover and presence and phenology of weed species and types. To validate the method, weed biomass, density and cover were measured in 100 quadrats in 4 fields before first weeding. The fields had 17 to 31 species with 3.5 to 4.7 species/quadrat. Weed cover varied from 23 to 34 percent with 134 to 214 individuals and 171 to 213 g biomass/m{ostrok}. No quadrats were weed-free. The CV for weed cover as estimated from 5 randomly constructed sets with 25, 50, and 75 quadrats for each field declined from 11 to 8 to 4 percent. The correlation of weed cover with weed biomass and with density ranged by field from 0.62-0.77 and from 0.59-0.78.
