El desarrollo de la actividad cacaotera en la región centroamericana depende en gran medida de la obtención de genotipos superiores de cacao de alta producción. Si se considera que tan sólo una de las enfermedades en el área, como es la moniliasis, puede causar pérdidas superiores al 80 por ciento, es fácil suponer que para alcanzar dicho objetivo es indispensable solucionar concomitantemente ambos problemas. Este artículo describe algunos de los más recientes esfuerzos que el CATIE está llevando a cabo, para generar e identificar genotipos de cacao de alta producción y resistencia a enfermedades, que permitan en el futuro cercano aprovechar al máximo las ventajas ecológicas de esta planta y obtener una rentabilidad satisfactoria. |
