El estudio se orientó para averiguar cual era el uso adecuado de la hoya del río Macho, situada en la Cordillera de Talamanca, Costa Rica, y las posibilidades de aplicar el manejo múltiple en el área. Con el fin de evaluar el uso forestal potencial se hizo un inventario en 2,205 Has. de bosque perteneciente a la formación montano bajo muy húmedo. Se empleó el muestreo sistemático de líneas de lotes circulares cubriendo una superficie total de 11.6 Has., lo que da una intensidad del 0.5. El volumen promedio por hectárea fue de 150.10 m3., tomando los árboles de 20 cm. o más de DAP. Con la ayuda de las fotografía aéreas se elaboró un mapa básico por triangulación mecánica, y uniendo al estudio de las fotografías el inventario, se determinaron los tipos vegetales y dentro de ellos las asociaciones. 1. Tipo primario a. Asociación Quercus copeyensis - Q. Guglielmi-treleasi. b. Asociación de dominancia repartida entre varias especies. c. Asociación Alfaroa - Laplacea - Magnolia. 2. Tipo secundario. a. Asociación de diferentes especies de Miconia b. Asociación Miconia - Vismia c. Sociación Rubus spp. d. Sociación Alnus jurullensi. la comparación del bosque estudia con otros dos bosques de Venezuela, que crecen en condiciones ambientales parecidas, dio mucha similaritud en su fisonomía y estructura. Con base en los datos acumulados se presenta una discusión sobre las posibles alternativas de manejo de la zona con sus ventajas y desventajas respectivas. Tanto la utilización de la zona para la obtención de productos forestales, como para Ganadería y agricultura, se descartan por las características del medio y las cualidades del bosque. Se pone de presente el potencial hidroeléctrico que representa la hoya del río Macho y su posible uso para recreación. De aquí se desprende la conveniencia de emplear el manejo múltiple en la zona, tomando como uso principal la Producción de agua y como uso complementario la recreación. Se incluyen algunas recomedaciones sobre los pasos iniciales para lograr la base del manejo múltiple |

The purpose of this study was to find appropriate use of the Rio Macho watershed in the Talamanca Mountains of Costa Rica, and the possibilities of applying multiple-use management in that area. In order to evaluate the forestry potential, an inventory was made of the 2,205 hectares of wet low montane forest in the upper watershed. The inventory was carried out by means of a systematic sample of circular plots whose total area of 11.6 hectares is equivalent to a sampling intensity of 0.5%. Only trees of 20 cm. dbh or over were included. The average volume per hectare was 150.19 m3. Based on the data obtained, an examination was made of possible alternatives of management of the zone with their respective advantages and disadvantages. The possible exploitation of the zone for forest products and agriculture and cattle was discarded due the low yield of the forest and unfavorable characteristics of the environment. The hydroelectric potential of the watershed of the Rio Macho and its possible use for recreation, are very promising and can become important. In order to secure the maximum benefits from the area, multiple-use management is suggested with water production as the main objective, and recreation as a secondary goal. Finally, some recommendations are made indicating preliminary steps that need to be taken in order to achieve the basis for multiple use management. |
