Para comparar el consumo de agua por distintos tipos de vegetación y relacionarlo con la evapotranspiración se midieron los cambios de humedad en la zona radical (0-18" de profundidad), ocasionados por una asociación de zacates y una asociación de bosque secundario. Las observaciones se tomaron durante el mes de Abril (estación seca) y en los meses de Mayo-Agosto (estación lluviosa) de 1961, en un terreno del Centro Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza para Graduados en Turrialba, Costa Rica. El análisis de los resultados obtenidos, demostró que los cambios de humedad en cada asociación estudiada, fueron muy similares en la estación lluviosa y diferentes en la estación seca. Dentro de cada asociación, los cambios de humedad del suelo no fueron uniformes en toda la profundidad estudiada se encontraron pequeñas diferencias en invierno y grandes diferencias en el verano estas diferencias se debieron al movivmiento del agua, que no fue simultáneo en toda la zona radical. Se encontró que en la profundidad estudiada (0-18"), el zacate consumió más agua que el bosque, principalmente por dos razones: 1) la mayor capacidad de retención encontrada en le suelo bajo zacate, y 2) la distribución del sistema radical de cada asociación, que pasó las 18" de profundidad en el bosque. |

Water use by different vegetation types was assessed through the measurements of soil moisture variations within the "root room" (0-18 inches of depth) from a grass association and a forest of secondary nature. Observations were made during April (dry season) and in May-August (wet season) on the property of the Tropical Center for Research and Graduate Training, in Turrialba, Costa Rica. The analysis of the results shows that soil moisture changes of both associations were very similar during the wet season but different during the dry season. For the wet season there was a correlation coefficient of 0.90 between soil moisture content under each association and a determination coefficient of 90 per cent. ‘These high values were found independently of vegetation cover, because of the tendency of evapotranspiration to depend on current weather conditions whenever available water in the soil is close to field capacity. Within each association, soil moisture changes were not uniform. Little differences were found during the wet season while large differences were common during the dry season. These were originated by the water movement within the soil, which was not uniform for the whole range of root room. Grass used more water than forest from the compared depth (0-15 inches), principally for two reasons: 1) the higher water holding capacity found under grass, and 2) the root distribution of each association, being deeper than 18 inches for the forest. |
