La necesidad de provisiones adecuadas de semilla de árboles de nombre correcto y localización identificada, cultivados con propósitos no industriales, p.e. leña, forraje, sombra, vallas, etc., en las zonas áridas de los tropicos son ahora generalmente realizados. Este trabajo describe un programa de la Commonwealth Forestry Institute, para coleccionar las semillas de especies de bosques no industriales nativas de America Central y de las regiones vecinas de Sudamerica. La semilla de 25 especies, de las que 21 pertenecen a las leguminosas (algunas botanicamente poco conocidas) ya ha sido recolectada. Las especies incluyen: Acacia deamii, A.. farnesiana, A. pennatula, Albizia guachepele, Apoplanesia paniculata, Atelia herbert-smithii, Caesalpinia coriaria,C. eriostachys, C. velutina, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, Gliricidia sepium, Haematoxylon brasiletto, Leucaena diversifolia, L. leucocephala, L. shannoni, Mimosa tenuiflora, Myrospermum frutescens, Parkinsonia aculeata, Pithecellobium dulce, Prosopis juliflora, Senna atomaria, and (on-Leguminosae) Alvaradoa amorphoides, Crescentia alata, Guazuma ulmifolia, and Simarouba glauca.
