La precipitación bajo el bosque, el flujo de precipitación por los tallos, la humedad de suelo, la evaporación y la transpiración fueron medidas en cuatro tipos de bosques en el área de Metapán-Montecristo, El Salvador. El tipo de bosque (latifoliadas vs. coníferas) tiene gran importancia sobre el balance hídrico de la región. Los cuatro tipos de bosques incluyeron: una plantación de ciprés (Cupressus lusitanica Mill.), una plantación de pino (Pinus pseudostrobus Lidl.), un bosque mixto de pino-roble (P. oocarpa Schiede y Quercus peduncularis NEE.), y un bosque de regeneración natural.
