Incrementar la productividad en la agricultura es uno de los mayores desafíos que hoy enfrenta la humanidad. La productividad agrícola se define como la relación entre los productos generados y los insumos utilizados para producirlos; se calcula dividiendo el valor de los productos entre el valor de esos insumos. El reto de la agricultura del siglo XXI es, por lo tanto, producir más y mejores alimentos, utilizando tierra, agua, mano de obra y avances tecnológicos hoy disponibles para una agricultura, además de productiva, sustentable e incluyente. En este documento se ofrece una visión detallada de las acciones que ha realizado el IICA para cumplir con dicho objetivo. En él se presentan las estrategias y los lineamientos definidos por el Instituto para incrementar la productividad, los principales proyectos que ha impulsado a esos efectos y algunos de los principales casos de éxito generados mediante nuestra cooperación técnica. Confío en que será de utilidad para los países miembros, los productores, las autoridades del sector, los consumidores y los investigadores relacionados con la agricultura continental.<br/> |

Increasing productivity in agriculture is one of the greatest challenges currently facing humankind. Agricultural productivity is defined as the relationship between products generated and the inputs used to produce them; it is calculated by dividing the value of products by the value of inputs. Therefore, one of the greatest challenges for agriculture in the 21st century is to produce more and better food using land, water, labor and available technological innovations in order to generate a productive, sustainable and inclusive agriculture. This document provides a detailed account of the actions that IICA has undertaken to fulfill the above mentioned objective. The document presents the strategies and guidelines that the Institute has defined to increase productivity, the main projects it has implemented for that purpose, as well as some of the main success cases resulting from its technical cooperation. I trust that the document will be useful to member countries, producers, agricultural authorities, consumers and researchers related to agriculture on our continent. |
