Summary, etc	El estudio evaluó el efecto de la certificación forestal y el pago por servicios ambientales en el desempeño ambiental del manejo de bosques naturales con fines de producción de madera en Costa Rica. La investigación se realizó en la Zona Norte y Atlántica del país en las áreas de conservación: Huetar Norte, Tortuguero, y Cordillera Volcánica Central. La evaluación del desempeño ambiental del manejo forestal, se realizó a través de una metodología basada en criterios e indicadores, seleccionados con base en el principio 6 de los estándares nacionales para la evaluación del manejo forestal sostenible y el monitoreo biológico. El estándar, quedó conformado por dos criterios y nueve indicadores. El mejor desempeño en el cumplimiento de las medidas de control de la erosión hídrica, impactó de claros por corta de árboles y construcción de caminos, se registró en las UMF con CFV y PSA-CFV; sin embargo, los valores de impacto total sobre el bosque productor para todos los tratamientos, se encuentra muy por debajo de los límites establejcidos en el estándar nacional (25 por ciento). Estos resultados demuestran claramente el efecto positivo que tienen la certificación forestal y el pago por servicios ambientales en mejorar el desempeño ambiental de las operaciones de aprovechamiento forestal, aún en condiciones como en Costa Rica, donde la legislación vigente ya de por sí conlleva a un aprovechamiento forestal de bajo impacto ambiental. Con base en lo anterior, se propone promover la CFV y el PSA en todos los bosques manejados para producción de madera, con el fin de conciliar un incremento de los beneficios económicos con el mantenimiento de la integridad ecológica de estos ecosistemas.

Summary, etc	This study evaluated the effects of forest certification and payment for environmental services on the environmental performance on natural forests management for timber production. This study was carried out in the North and Atlantic zones in Costa Rica in the conservation areas: Huetas Norte, Tortuguero, and the Central Volcanic Corridor. The evaluation of the environmental performance for forest management was carried oujt by using a methodology based on criteria and indicators selected based on the sixth principle of the national standards in order to evaluate sustainable forest management and biological monitoring. The standard consisted of two criteria and nine indicators. The best performance for achieving the control measures for water erosion, the impact of openings caused by harvesting, and the construction of roads was found in the FMUs with CFV and PES-CFV. However, the total impact values for the production forests for all of the treatments were much lower than the limits established in the national standars (25 percent). These results clearly showed the positive effects of forest certification and payments for environmental service in improving environmental performance in forest harvesting operations, even in Costa Rican conditions where the current legislation mandates low environmental impact. CFV and PES should be encouraged in all of the forests managed for timber in order to increase economic benefits while maintaining the ecological integrity of these ecosystems.
