El área de estudio comprendió La concesión Forestal de Carmelita (53.797 ha) y la Cooperativa Técnica Agropecuaria (4.590 ha), esta última con tenencia de la tierra en propiedad privada. Las dos comunidades se localizan en la Reserva de la Biosfera Maya-RBM, Petén, Guatemala. Los antecedentes de estas áreas difieren culturalmente entre si. Carmelita, está conformada por 70 familias y se caracteriza por su larga trayectoria en el uso de productos no maderables del bosque -PNMB-, desde hace más de 100 años. La Técnica Agropecuaria por su parte, está conformada por 43 familias de campesinos provenientes de la Costa Sur Occidental de Guatemala, con una cultura altamente asociada a la agricultura; con aproximadamente 30 años de haberse ubicado en la región. El objetivo principal del estudio fue determinar la contribución del manejo forestal; en el mejoramiento de las condiciones sociales y económicas de dos comunidades contrastantes, localizadas en la RBM. La metodología se basó en las siguientes fuentes primarias: a) encuestas a miembros de las comunidades, b) entrevistas a funcionarios de Instituciones asociadas con la investigación, c) taller participativo en cada comunidad y d) inventario de reconocimiento de productos no maderables del bosque -PNMB- en La Técnica. También se recurrió a fuentes secundarias, tales como: a) registros contables de las comunidades y b) plan general de manejo y planes operativos anuales de cada unidad y c) Plan Maestro de la RBM. Las variables recopiladas fueron de orden social, económico, biofísico y financiero. La investigación logró demostrar en términos estadísticos y financieros, la importancia de las actividades asociadas con el aprovechamiento de los recursos del bosque de ambas comunidades. No obstante, se requiere de un análisis más profundo de las relaciones sociales y económicas; a efecto de evaluar el alcance de la sostenibilidad en el manejo de los recursos naturales, en el largo plazo. |

This research was conducted in Carmelita (a forest concession with 53.797 ha) and La Técnica (private cooperativa, with 4.590 ha). These two communities are located in the Mayan Biosphere Reserve, MBR in Petén, Guatemala. These communities are culturally different from each other. Carmelita has 70 families with a large history (almost 100 years) in harvesting of non timber products. On the other hand, La Técnica Agropecuaria has 43 families, most of them came from the pacific coast of Guatemala; with a strong relation to traditional agriculture activities and with more than 30 years of being settled in the region. The main objective of this research was to determine the SFM contribution to improve social and economical welfare of two different communities of the MBR. Data for conducting this research came from the following primary sources: a) Survey to a sample of each community members; b) interviews to key personnel from the NGO's which technically assist these two communities; c) a participatory workshop in each community; and d) a general inventory of non timber products, specifically, in La Técnica. Some information came from secondary sources such as: a) financial accountability data; b) forest management plan and annual operating plans; and c) The Master Plan of the MBP. The analyzed variables covered social, economical, biophysical and financial issues. This research strongly demonstrated the financial importance of forest contribution to communities economy. Statistically, it was determined the difference between these communities in terms of the way they capture and distribute goods and services from the forest. However, a more interdisciplinary analysis is needed to determine the social and economical facts that directly or indirectly may affect natural resources sustainability in the long term. |
