En los países tropicales, el área de bosque primario está disminuyendo, pero aumenta el área de bosque secundario. Ya existen estudios acerca de estos ecosistemas que han permitido conocer su estructura y composición en las diferentes etapas sucesionales; sin embargo, en la región centroamericana es poca la información que se tiene acerca del potencial ambiental y socioeconómico de los bosques secundarios. Por esta razón, se realizó una investigación acerca de la rentabilidad y la influencia del marco legal vigente en tres países centroamericanos (Honduras, Nicaragua y Costa Rica), con el fin de aportar datos válidos a la discusión del potencial socioeconómico de los bosques secundarios. Los resultados demuestran que la composición, estructura y fase de sucesión de los bosques secundarios estudiados determinan el potencial económico y el manejo a aplicar. El caso de Costa Rica mostró una rentabilidad que permite cubrir todos los costos, incluidos los de requisitos legales. Las experiencias de Nicaragua y Honduras mostraron rentabilidades negativas, pues los ingresos no cubren los costos por la alta incidencia de los costos de transacción y los bajos precios de la madera en el mercado nacional. La investigación permitió concluir que, desde el punto de vista técnico, el manejo de bosques secundarios tiene buenas perspectivas pero que los numerosos trámites y requisitos legales (costos de transacción) constituyen una seria limitación. |

While the area of primary forests is shrinking in tropical countries, the surface under secondary forests is extending. Many studies about these ecosystems have provided information about their structure and composition in different succession phases. Nevertheless, in Central America only a few studies have analyzed the environmental and economic feasibility of secondary forest management. This research was aimed at determining both the financial profitability and the influence of the legal framework on secondary forest management in Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The results showed that composition, structure and succession phase of secondary forests determined the economic potential and the selection of the management strategy. Profitability in the Costa Rican case covered all costs, including legal costs. Nicaraguan and Honduran experiences had negative financial results; incomes did not cover costs due to high transaction costs and low prices of products in the national market. As a conclusion, it was evident that the management of secondary forests presented good perspectives from a technical point of view, but paperwork and legal requisites (transaction costs) were a serious limitation. |
