El Golfo de Nicoya (GN) es uno de los principales centros pesqueros de Costa Rica, con cerca de 2500 pescadores artesanales y 800 extractores de moluscos. El principal objetivo de esta investigación fue valorar económicamente los SE brindados por los manglares. El estudio se realizó en dos partes. En primer lugar, se elaboró un análisis de la percepción local sobre el manglar, para el cual se consideraron las siguientes variables de interés: percepción local, actividades basadas en el manglar, acciones para el manejo y la conservación y las tradiciones locales relacionadas al manglar. Como segunda parte, se realizó una valoración económica de tres SE: servicio de aprovisionamiento de alimento (moluscos), secuestro y almacenamiento de carbono (carbono azul) y la contribución a actividades recreativas y ecoturismo en la Isla de Chira. Para la valoración económica del carbono azul, se utilizaron los precios del mercado voluntario internacional. Finalmente, se utilizó la metodología de Costo de Viaje, mediante la cual se entrevistó a los turistas que visitaron la isla durante la Semana Santa. Las personas entrevistadas reconocen el manglar como su principal fuente de ingreso. Su inquietud principal es el aumento de la contaminación del manglarCon base en las estimaciones, el ingreso neto mensual por concepto de extracción de moluscos es de aproximadamente $237-$378. Al considerar el valor anual para la población, se obtienen valores entre $2, 124,600 y $3, 3391,610/año. El carbono secuestrado podría potencialmente aportar entre 15 y $37.70/ha. Los turistas invierten aproximadamente $190 colones por viaje a la Isla de Chira. Si se analizan las pérdidas históricas de manglar desde el punto de vista económico, se obtiene una pérdida monetaria de $31 millones en términos de existencias de carbono que se perdieron. |

Gulf of Nicoya is the main fisheries center of Costa Rica, with about 2,500 artisan fishermen and 800 mollusk extractors. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the economic importance of ecosystem services provided by mangroves to the communities in Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica. Since the importance of ecosystem services to human society has many dimensions the research was carried out in two parts. First, we conducted a perception study on the role of mangroves in people's livelihoods. Variables of interest were local perception, activities based off of mangroves, actions for management and conservation, and local traditions. Then we conducted an economic valuation study of three environmental services: carbon stocks (blue carbon), extraction of mollusks and recreation and ecotourism in Chira Island. Finally, travel cost method was used to estimate the economic value of the recreation activities related to mangroves in Chira Island. It was survey 50 tourists during high season (Holy Week). People recognize some of the ecosystem services and identify mangrove forests as their source of income. The main concern expressed by people is the increasing contamination in coastal areas and the overexploitation of marine resources. The mean net monthly income per household from mollusks extraction was calculated to be around $237-$378. The aggregate annual value of the 746 household collecting mangrove products on a regular basis was estimated to be around $2,124,600 y $3,3391,610/year. Depending on the carbon sequestration rate the economic value of this ecosystem service is estimated to be in range between 15 and $37/ha. The tourists spend $190/trip to Chira Island. From economic point of view, the historical losses of mangroves areas are equivalent to $31 million in term of carbon stocks losses. |
