520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc The present study is a contribution to the biocultural knowledge and uses of diverse crops and plants that contribute to the food security and agrobiodiversity conservation of two q'eqchi' communities, Salac1 and Julhix. The objective is to identify the traditional practices of plant uses that contribute to food and nutritional security and agrobiodiversity conservation from an inclusion and equity standpoint in the Salac1 and Julhix communities, Alta Verapaz department, Guatemala. The Community Capitals Framework was applied in each community to understand its social context and to identify the state of the available resources or capitals. For the study sample, we worked with 33 families (20 in Salac 1 and 13 in Julhix) and instruments such as visits to gardens and plots, participative workshops, community observation, informal talks and semi-structured interviews were used. We consulted primary and secondary literature to expand on nutritional values and other traditional practices. For the results, an inventory was performed on the species present in the gardens of the families interviewed, identifying 109 species in Salac 1, divided in 133 different uses (46 food crops, 24 fruit crops, 16 for wood, 5 ornamental, 13 medicinal and 29 for other uses) and for Julhix 51 species were identified, divided in 55 uses (31 food crops, 2 fruit crops, 3 for wood, 3 ornamental, 4 medicinal and 6 for other uses). The traditional practices associated to agriculture and their natural resources management were learned. A traditional Q'eqchi' practice, the Mayejak, was highlighted, as well as the annual crop cycle, recognizing the bond between the Q'eqchi' people with nature. Finally, a methodological proposal, "exchange of experiences" was developed, which can be replicated in other communities to encourage crop diversification, mainly natives species, to integrate food security and strengthen the provision of their own food. The importance of rescuing traditional practices with regards to agricultural management of species, not only supports food and nutritional security, but also promotes agrobiodiversity conservation and the respect for natural resources. These actions allow the Q'eqchi' culture to strengthen and endure within the possibility of acculturation. The gardens and plots of the studied communities contribute to their own family food supply, covering great part of their vitamins, minerals and protein needs of their daily intake that contribute to their food security, and therefore not presenting cases of severe malnutrition of the people interviewed.
