| Summary, etc | Para desarrollar la investigación se realizó un inventario de los brinzales, latizales y fustales encontrados en 135 potreros activos de 57 fincas ganaderas de Esparza, Costa Rica. Se encontró un total de 6.549 fustales, 1.047 latizales y 2.509 brinzales de regeneración natural pertenecientes a 32 familias, 54 géneros y 63 especies arbóreas. El 66% de las especies (42 especies) fueron catalogadas como de uso maderable. También, se encontró un volumen promedio de 19,23 m3 ha-1 y una cobertura arbórea de 12,44% ha-1, en donde el tamaño de las fincas (pequeñas, medianas y grandes) no tuvo influencia en el volumen y cobertura arbórea reportada. Por otro lado, se observó que debido a la excesiva regulación que existe en Costa Rica para la solicitud de trámites de aprovechamientos maderables, en la actualidad los ganaderos no se ven atraídos a incorporar la producción de árboles maderables en sus potreros y por lo tanto, no se garantiza la permanencia de varias especies a futuro. Sin embargo, para aquellas fincas que cuenten con una densidad mayor o igual a 18 fustales ha-1 la actividad es rentable desde los primeros años. Si se utilizara un sistema de pagos por incentivos para el manejo de regeneración natural o si se vendiera la madera en patio de aserradero la actividad se volvería rentable para todas las fincas, pudiendo tener densidades de hasta seis fustales por ha-1 en un inicio, con la salvedad de que un 20% de estos deben tener un dap mayor a 30 cm. |

| Summary, etc | An inventory of seedlings, saplings and taper was made for 135 active paddocks of 57 cattle farms in Esparza, Costa Rica. A total of 6549 commercial sized trees, 1047 saplings and 2509 seedlings were found in natural regeneration belonging to 32 families, 54 genera and 63 species of trees. Sixty six percent of all the species (42 species) were classified for timber use. An average volume of 19.23 m3 ha-1 and a canopy cover of 12.44% ha-1 were found, where farm size (small, medium and large) had no influence on the reported volume and tree cover. On the other hand, it was found that due to excessive regulation in Costa Rica for the application of timber harvesting procedures, at present farmers are not attracted to the production of timber trees in their paddocks and therefore there is no guarantee of the permanence of various species in the future. However, for those farms which have a density greater than or equal to 18 commercial sized trees ha-1, the activity is profitable from an early age. If an incentive payment system for management of natural regeneration of trees could be used, or if timber could be sold at sawmills, the activity becomes profitable for all farms, and may have densities up to 6 per ha-1 commercial sized trees initially, except that 20% of these should have a greater than 30 cm dbh. |
