En las zonas rurales de Costa Rica trabajan aproximadamente 36.244 personas con edades comprendidas entre los 12 y 17 años. La mayoría de estos menores de edad están excluidos del sistema educativo formal y realizan labores peligrosas, por las condiciones del trabajo agropecuario en el que participan. Este tipo de trabajos deriva de algunas causas como la pobreza, la baja empleabilidad de las personas adultas y otras. Esta realidad se evidenció en las zonas rurales de los cantones Turrialba y Jiménez, lo que motivó a CEFEMINA (institución no gubernamental) en el 2005, a implementar el Programa Acción "Manos jóvenes". La estrategia de este Programa contempló la formación integral como medio para el retiro de las labores peligrosas y el estímulo de la empleabilidad y/o emprendedurismo de adolescentes trabajadores rurales. Ocho años después que concluyó el Programa, se planteó el siguiente estudio con el fin de evaluar si las herramientas y métodos empleados, lograron en cierta medida influir en el aspecto laboral y educativo de los jóvenes participantes. Para el desarrollo de este estudio se contó con 64 de los 90 participantes iniciales. Entre los principales resultados, destaca que los participantes laboran mayoritariamente en el sector terciario. En cuanto a iniciativas empresariales, se encontró que se desarrollaron nueve emprendimientos, pero por distintas causas en la actualidad se mantienen seis. Con respecto al aspecto educativo, se determinó que los jóvenes optaron por un sistema de educación no formal, como alternativa para continuar aprendiendo, con énfasis en los temas que consideran importantes para el desarrollo de sus actividades. Por su parte aquellos que se inclinaron por una educación formal, el mayor porcentaje lo comprenden las personas que teniendo una educación primaria completa, continuaron con los estudios secundarios. Finalmente, en cuanto a la percepción del Programa, un alto porcentaje determinó que si influyó en sus decisiones y actividades futuras, mencionando que los principales cambios fueron de actitud, autoestima y perspectiva de las actividades y de su vida. |

Approximately 36,244 people between 12 and 17 years old works in rural areas of Costa Rica. Most of them are excluded from the formal education system and are involved in hazardous work conditions because of the kind of agricultural work. This kind of work derives from some causes like poverty, adult's low employability and others. This reality was evident in rural areas of Turrialba and Jiménez, and motivated CEFEMINA (non-governmental organization) in 2005, to implement the Action Program "Young Hands". It´s strategy focus on rural adolescent workers and contemplated two topics: comprehensive education, as a mean to draw from hazardous work conditions, and employability and / or entrepreneurship encouragement. Eight years after the program ended, this paper wants to evaluate if the tools and methods used, somehow were able to influence in the young´s working and educational aspects. This study worked with 64 of the initial 90 participants. Nowdays, the participants mainly work in the tertiary sector. Regarding entrepreneurship, nine enterprises were developed, but for different reasons today remain six. With respect to the educational aspect, it was determined that young people opted for a non-formal education system as an alternative to continue learning, with emphasis on issues that are important for the development of their activities. Meanwhile, of those who followed a formal education, the highest percentage was conformed of people that complete primary school and choose to continue with the high school. Finally, program perception is high among participants who argued it influenced their decisions and future activities: accordingly, the noted major changes in attitude, self-esteem, activities prospect and life in general. |
