La presente investigación se realizó durante el año 2010 en el Valle del Cibao, República Dominicana con el propósito de generar conocimiento sobre los cambios tecnológicos que se han producido en las prácticas del cultivo de plátano de los agricultores y las razones de esos cambios. El estudio analiza la situación actual de los productores de plátano, se determinan los cambios tecnológicos realizados en los últimos 10 años, se analizan las razones de estos cambios y sus efectos. La recolección de información primaria se realizó mediante entrevistas estructuradas a una muestra de 182 productores de la región del Cibao. La metodología de la investigación empleó conjuntamente el enfoque de medios de vida sostenibles, métodos cualitativos como la entrevista a actores clave, la observación participativa y la revisión documental, y el análisis cuantitativo mediante comparaciones estadísticas. Los resultados demuestran que la variedad FHIA-21 se ha difundido en la región del Cibao en un periodo de 10 años, y que actualmente alrededor del 62% de los productores en la región han adoptado la variedad básicamente de manera parcial. Se demostró que el seguimiento de la aceptabilidad y la adopción de nuevas tecnologías, es primordial para realizar un eficiente proceso de difusión o transferencia de tecnologías. El contexto de vulnerabilidad de los agricultores, su disponibilidad de recursos, y sus percepciones sobre las características de nuevas tecnologías, son factores determinantes en las decisiones de adopción e innovación. |

The present study was carried out in year 2010 in the Cibao valley, Dominican Republic aiming to generate knowledge on the technological changes that have taken place in the plantain cultivation practices of the farmers and the reasons of those changes. The study analyzes the current situation of the plantain farmers, characterizes the technological changes that have taken place over the last 10 years and analyzes the reasons and impacts of these changes. The collection of primary information was carried out by structured interviews to a sample of 182 farmers from the region of the Cibao. The methodology of the investigation employed jointly the sustainable livelihoods approach, qualitative methods like the interview to key actors, the participatory observation and the documentary review, and the quantitative analysis of statistical comparisons. The results show that the FHIA-21 variety has been diffused in the region of the Cibao in a period of 10 years, and that at present around the 62% of the farmers in the region have adopted the variety. It was shown that the monitoring of the acceptability and the adoption of new technologies is fundamental to carry out an efficient process of diffusion or transfer of technologies. The context of vulnerability of the farmers, their availability of resources, and their perceptions on the characteristic of new technologies, are determinant factors in the decisions of adoption and innovation. |
