El trabajo se realizó en bosques secundarios del trópico húmedo de bajura, en la región Huetar Norte de Costa Rica. Con el objetivo de cuantificar los cambios en la estructura y diversidad de árboles en estos bosques, en 1997 se montaron cuatro parcelas permanentes de diferentes edades: Cuatro Ríos (25 años), Lindero El Peje (20 años), La Tirimbina (15 años) y Lindero Sur (12 años). Las parcelas medían 50 m x 200 m (1 ha), subdivididas en 100 subparcelas de 10 m x 10 m. En cada una se evaluó al dap, la abundancia, el número y riqueza de especies, el área basal, la altura total, el incremento corriente anual y la biomasa de todos los árboles ≥ 10 cm dap. Tras ocho años de evaluaciones, la densidad tendió a disminuir conforme aumentó la edad de los sitios, y los lugares más jóvenes tendieron hacia el aumento del número de individuos; sin embargo, los de mayor edad siguen teniendo mayor densidad. En ningún lugar hubo un cambio importante en la riqueza de especies. El área basal en los cuatro bosques evaluados aumentó con la maduración. El incremento medio anual fue: Cuatro Ríos 1,1 mm, El Peje 1,4 mm,<br/>Tirimbina 2,7 mm y Lindero Sur 3,5 mm. Las especies comerciales rondan entre 35 y 40% del total de especies encontradas y representan más del 70% del área basal del bosque. La biomasa también se incrementó con la edad del bosque excepto en La Tirimbina, donde se obtuvieron los valores más bajos.<br/> |

Our study was conducted in lowland secondary forests in the Huetar Norte region of Costa Rica. In 1997, four different-age permanent simple plots were established with the objective of quantifying changes in the structure and diversity of trees: Cuatro Rios (25 years old), Lindero El Peje (20 yr old), Tirimbina (15 yr old), and Lindero Sur (12 yr old). Each 1 ha plot measured 50 x 200 m, divided into 100 subplots of 10 x 10 m. Within each plot, annual surveys were conducted, measuring DBH, abundance, species density, and species richness for all trees ≥ 10 cm DBH. From these measurements we calculated annual diameter increment, basal area, and aboveground biomass increment. Over eight years, tree density tended to decrease in older plots, whereas the youngest plots showed increases in the number of individuals; nevertheless, older plots had a higher density of trees. Species richness of trees showed little or no change over time. The basal area and aboveground biomass for all four plots increased within plots over time as well as with initial plot age. Mean annual diameter increments were: 1.1 mm/yr in Cuatro Rios, 1.4 mm/yr in Lindero el Peje, 2.7 mm/yr in Tirimbina, and 3.5 mm/yr in Lindero Sur. Commercial tree species composed between 35-40% of all species and represented more than 70% of the basal area.<br/> |
