| Summary, etc | A pesar de que se conoce la capacidad que tienen los bosques y algunos sistemas silvopastoriles para almacenar carbono, aún falta información acerca del potencial de secuestro de carbono en suelo y en la biomasa arbórea en los sistemas de uso de la tierra predominantes en paisajes dominados por la ganadería. Se estimó el almacenamiento de carbono orgánico del suelo (COS) y de la biomasa arbórea arriba del suelo en distintos usos de la tierra en Colombia, Costa Rica y Nicaragua. Los usos de la tierra evaluados fueron pasturas degradadas, pasturas naturales y mejoradas con y sin árboles, bancos forrajeros, plantaciones forestales, bosques riparios y bosques secundarios. En los tres países las pasturas degradadas fueron el uso de la tierra que menos C total almacenó. Los resultados muestran que en cada uno de los paisajes ganaderos analizados las pasturas degradadas no están aportando significativamente al secuestro de carbono, mientras que las pasturas mejoradas con árboles y los sistemas silvopastoriles son usos de la tierra con mayores potenciales. |

| Summary, etc | Although the capacity of forests and some silvopastoral systems to store carbon is well known, there is little information about their potential to sequester carbon in soil and tree biomass in the main land uses in landscapes dominated by cattle. We estimated the storage of soil organic carbon (SOC) and tree biomass carbon in different land uses in Colombia, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. The land uses evaluated were degraded pasture, native pasture and improved pasture with and without trees, fodder bank, forest plantation, riparian forest and secondary forest. Degraded pasture was the land use with less carbon in all three countries. Our results show that in the three agricultural landscapes studied, degraded pastures had significantly lower C stocks compared to improved pastures with trees and forest systems, and that there are good opportunities for C sequestration in agricultural landscapes dominated by cattle. |
