Summary, etc	El objetivo del estudio fue relacionar el aumento poblacional, los cambios de uso del suelo y las actividades humanas con el deterioro del recurso hídrico superficial y subterráneo en la microcuenca del río Ciruelas, subcuenca del río Virilla, Costa Rica, durante los periodos 1989-1998 y 1998-2003. El estudio demuestra que la mayor tendencia en la dinámica del uso del suelo en la microcuenca es hacia la expansión de los asentamientos humanos, y que la densidad poblacional en los cantones de la microcuenca presentó un crecimiento continuo. Según la percepción local, los planes reguladores municipales son herramientas urgentes y necesarias para realizar gestiones eficientes con respecto a los recursos hídricos. La falta de un sistema de alcantarillado sanitario y tratamiento para aguas residuales es un problema en la microcuenca por falta de coordinación institucional y limitaciones económicas. En la microcuenca existe un alto grado de información e interés sobre la situación actual de los recursos hídricos; sin embargo, falta coordinación y comunicación entre los actores locales.

Summary, etc	The objective of the research was to relate the population increase, changes in soil use, and human activities with the deterioration of surface and underground water resources in the Ciruelas river microwatershed, Virilla river subwatershed, Costa Rica during a span of time from 1989-1998 and 1998-2003. The study demonstrated that the main tendency in soil use was toward the expansion of human settlements, and that population density showed a continuous growth. According to local perception, municipal regulatory plans are urgently needed to efficiently manage water resources. Lack of sewer and residual water treatments is a problem in the microwatershed due to poor institutional coordination and economic limitations. Among settlers, there is a high level of information and interest regarding the actual situation of water resources in the micro-watershed; nevertheless, there is neither coordination nor communication among local actors.
