Summary, etc El objetivo del estudio fue la identificación de variables físicas, químicas y especies claves del suelo que podrían ser usadas como indicadores de la calidad de los suelos de los cafetales de Turrialba. Bajo las condiciones del estudio, los resultados sugieren que las fincas bajo el manejo orgánico son más propensas para sostener mayor producción biológica y mantener las funciones básicas del ecosistema que las fincas bajo el manejo convencional y de pleno sol. Mayores estudios son requeridos en el tema para establecer un índice de calidad de suelo más completo para los cafetales de la zona de Turrialba.

Summary, etc The objective of the study was to identify key soil physical and chemical variables and bioindicators which can be used as soil quality indicators in the coffee farms of Turrialba. Under existing experimental conditions, the results suggest that organic farms are more likely to sustain higher biological production and maintain basic ecological functions than conventionally managed farms. The biological indicators used in this study are quite promising and further research in this field plus in-depth analyses of other variables such as (but not limited to) funtional diversity and biomass of bacteria, fungi and protozoa in more coffee farms in the same region is necessary to fine tune the additive soil quality index used in the present study.
