La presente investigación aborda el tema de la tenencia y uso de la tierra en la cuenca del lago Petén Itzá, en el período comprendido entre 1986 y 2001. Por medio de imágenes satélite, se determinó el uso actual y la tasa de deforestación en la cuenca. Además se elaboró un catastro digital de 1085 fincas privadas y ejidales y 312 arrendamientos que se encuentran parcial o totalmente incluidos en el área de influencia de la cuenca. En conjunto, las áreas privadas cambiaron 15.4 porciento de su superficie boscosa durante el período, en tanto que en las áreas ejidales se realizaron cambios de cobertura en 3550 ha (14.2 porciento de su cobertura boscosa) desde 1986. |

The linkage between land tenure and land use in the Petén Itzá Lake basin for the period 1986-2001 was analyzed with this study. Through satellite imagery, land use and deforestation rates were determined. A digital cadastre was elaborated with information from 1085 private and ejidal farms, and 312 arrendamientos, partially or totally included in the basin influence area. Private properties caused a land use change of 15.4 percent during the span of research, while ejidal properties changed 3550 ha of forest to agricultural uses (14.2 percent). |
