Se evalúo el potencial turístico de las aves y su contribución al desarrollo sostenible de tres comunidades en la zona de amortiguamiento del Parque Nacional Tapantí Macizo de la Muerte: Villa Mills a 2800 msnm, San Gerardo de Dota a 2200 msnm y Copey de Dota a 1950 msnm. Se caracterizó la oferta y la demanda y se establecieron consideraciones estratégicas de planificación y manejo del turismo sostenible basado en la observación de aves. En la zona se registraron 216 especies de aves: 49 endémicas, 32 migratorias, 4 en la lista roja de aves amenazadas y 25 atractivas al turista observador de aves, de las cuales ocho fueron seleccionadas como las de mayor atractivo por parte de los guías observadores de aves entrevistados. El endemismo fue el criterio más relevante para escoger las especies más atractivas. El 84,8 % de turistas extranjeros entrevistados realizaron actividades de observación de aves y la definieron como el principal atractivo. La misma proporción de turistas nacionales entrevistados priorizaron el descanso, la pesca de trucha, caminatas en el bosque y paseos a caballo. A pesar de que las tres comunidades se ubican en la misma región y presentan características ornitológicas muy parecidas, tienen diferentes niveles de desarrollo turístico. En la comunidad de Villa Mills se está desarrollando el turismo científico y educativo. En la comunidad de San Gerardo de Dota, actividades turísticas dirigidas a la observación de aves. En la comunidad de Copey de Dota se están dando pequeñas iniciativas de promoción del lugar a nivel nacional y promoción de las aves a nivel internacional<br/> |

This paper seeks to determine the tourism potential of birds, and its contribution to the sustainable development of three towns located in the buffer zone of the Tapantí Macizo de la Muerte National Park: Villa Mills (2800 masl), San Gerardo de Dota (2200 masl) and Copey de Dota (1950 masl). Supply and demand were characterized first, and then, strategic considerations were defined for the planning and management of tourism based on bird watching. In the area, 216 bird species were registered: 49 endemic, 32 migratory, 4 in the Red List of endangered species, and 25 attractive for bird watchers. From the last group, eight species were chosen by bird watching guides as the most attractive. Endemism was the most<br/>relevant criterion for attractiveness. Among the foreign tourists interviewed, 84.8% participated in bird watching and defined it as the most important attraction in the area. A similar percentage of national tourists considered that relax, trout fishing, hiking and horseback riding are the best attractions. The three communities evaluated are within the same region and share similar ornithological characteristics; even though the tourism development is quite different. In Villa Mills, tourism relates mainly to scientific and educative activities associated with forest characteristics and forest management. In San Gerardo de Dota, bird watching has existed for 20 years; local dwellers have developed infrastructure to cope with this type of tourism.
