Actitudes positivas, conocimientos aceptables de prácticas alternativas de roza y quema, que permitan un manejo adecuado de la finca y del uso sostenible de los recursos naturales, son requisitos esenciales para la participación de los productores en el manejo del recurso forestal. En el borde de la Gran Reserva Biológica Indio-Maíz, los productores tienen diferentes actitudes hacia el futuro de los bosques en sus fincas, sin embargo tienen similitudes en los pocos conocimientos que poseen con respecto a sus recursos forestales y en el manejo actual de la finca, que conducen a la explotación indiscriminada, degradación y deforestación de los bosques. Las experiencias y los fracasos demuestran el valor de la participación de las comunidades locales en el comanejo de los recursos naturales. |

Positive attitudes towards and adequate knowledge of alternatives to slash-and-burn agriculture and management practices for the sustainable use of natural resources are essential for small-farmer participation in forest management. In the buffer zone of the Indio- Maiz Biological Reserve in southern Nicaragua, small-farmers vary significantly in their attitudes concerning the future permanence of forests on their land. In general, these farmers utilize similar production systems and have limited knowledge of sustainable management practices. As a result, indiscriminante exploitation of forests, deforestation and land degradation are widespread. A thorough understanding of successes and failures to date is important in order to increase the participation of local communities in the co-management of their natural resources. |
