El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar los procesos de aprovechamiento forestal y aserrío por medio de los flujos de carbono en los residuos producidos durante el año 2002, en la unidad de manejo (UM) Río Chanchich y UM Uaxactún, ambas ubicadas en la Reserva Biosfera "Maya", Guatemala. Las áreas aprovechadas fueron 366 ha (3.5 ind/ha) y 400 ha (0.7 ind/ha), respectivamente. Para este propósito se construyeron cuatro escenarios: aprovechamiento mejorado con dos diferentes tecnologías de aserrío y aprovechamiento tradicional, también con dos tecnologías de aserrío. Para el aprovechamiento mejorado se seleccionaron 4.5 por ciento de los individuos aprovechados en Río Chanchich y 18.5 por ciento en Uaxactún, estimándose el volumen de madera de todo el individuo. A 49 individuos de Río Chanchich, se les estimó la biomasa dañada por la acción de su caída. La biomasa removida por la construcción de caminos, se estimó a partir de 50 parcelas en cada área de estudio, extrapolando a la longitud total de estos. Para los patios de acopio se censó la biomasa antes de su apertura y por diferencia con el área real aperturada, se estimó la biomasa removida. En el aserradero, se tomó la información de 95 trozas provenientes de Río Chanchich, estimándoseles el volumen útil y de residuos. Para el aprovechamiento tradicional y aserrío con motosierra, se trabajó con información de literatura y bases de datos, aplicando la información reportada a los mismos datos que en el aprovechamiento mejorado. |

The objective of this study was to evaluate carbon dynamic in residuals produced during the processes of forest and sawing management in the management units (MU) Río Chanchich and Uaxactún during 2002, both located in the Reserva Biosfera Maya, Guatemala. The managed areas were 366 ha (3.5 ind/ha) and 400 ha (0.7 ind/ha), respectively. Four scenarios were constructed: two different sawing technologies with improved management, and two sawing technologies with traditional management. In the improved management, the total individual wood volume were estimated from a selection of 4.5 percent of improved individuals in Río Chanchich and 18.5 percent in Uaxactún. The damaged biomass caused by falling action of 49 individuals in Río Chanchich was estimated. For the traditional management and motor chain sawing, the information was obtained from literature review and data bases. The same information was applied to the improved management. |
