En el caso de la producción de café, la biodiversidad asociada con la presencia y distribución de la sombra de los cafetales es de gran interés ecológico. Es necesario el conocimiento de la funcionalidad de las hormigas en los agroecosistemas cafetaleros, y especialmente de las especies que podrían actuar como agentes de control biológico de plagas, para establecer recomendaciones acerca de su conservación o su incremento. Por tanto, se examinaron los patrones de diversidad de especies de hormigas como complemento de otros estudios sobre dichos sistemas en tres fincas de café, las cuales contenían sistemas de producción representativos de un gradiente que abarcaba desde un sistema totalmente orgánico hasta uno comercial, contrastantes en cuanto al uso de insumos. En el sistema totalmente orgánico se registró la mayor riqueza, equidad y diversidad de especies de hormigas, debido a la edad del cafetal y a su mayor complejidad estructural. Solenopsis germinata fue la especie ampliamente dominante en todos los sistemas, con excepción del sistema totalmente orgánico, donde predominó Pheidole radoszkowskii. Algunas especies capturadas en este estudio (W. auropunctata y C. curvispinosus) o afines a ellas (Solenopsis spp. y Brachymyrmex spp.) tienen potencial como depredadoras de la broca del café, por lo cual se deben efectuar estudios detallados, tanto de laboratorio como de campo, para determinar las preferencias alimentarias de dichas especies hacia las plagas claves indicadas. Una vez efectuado esto, sería necesario estudiar los requerimientos de hábitats de dichas especies para tratar de optimizarlos, de modo que se pueda lograr su conservación e incremento y, así, su actividad como agentes de control biológico de plagas. |

There is a great ecological interest in the biodiversity associated with the presence and distribution of shade in coffee plantations. It is necessary to know the utility of ants in agro-ecosystems of coffee plantations and especially the utility of those ant species that could act as agents for biological pest control in order to give recommendations concerning their conservation or increasing them. For this reason, the patterns of species diversity of ants were examined in three coffee plantations. The three coffee plantations included in the study have production systems that represent a gradient from a totally organic system to a commercial plantation. In this study we characterized diversity ants losses associated with the management practices intensify at coffee yields. The greatest species richness, evenness and diversity were recorded in the totally organic system, due to the age and the most complex structure of the plantation. Solenopsis geminata was a widely dominant species in all of the systems with the exception of the totally organic system in which Pheidole radoszkowskii predominated. Some species caught in this study (W. auropunctata y C. curvispinosus) or others similar to them (Solenopsis spp. and Brachymyrmex spp.) may act as predators of coffee berry borer. Thus, more detailed laboratory and field research is needed in order to determine the alimentary preferences of these species concerning the key pests indicated in the study. After that it would be necessary to study the habitat requirements of these species in order to optimize their conservation or increasing them and thus to enhance their activity as agents of biological pest control. |
