Señala inicialmente algunas características genéticas y botánicas de la arveja (Pisum sativum), para luego destacar sus posibilidades mediante la polinización artificial y dar algunos lineamientos en ese sentido. Indica que un programa de mejoramiento genético de la arveja debe cimentarse en objetivos bien definidos a corto, mediano y largo plazo; y fijar metas cuantitativas en el tiempo y en el espacio. A manera de ejemplo, enumera los objetivos del programa de mejoramiento genético de arveja en Colombia. Explica posteriormente varios métodos de mejoramiento genético, algunos tradicionales y otros más específicos según se busque incorporar características particulares. Los métodos señalados son: genealógico, masal, retrocruzamiento, descendencia de semilla simple, dialélico selectivo, mejoramiento convergente, formación de compuestos y, mutagénesis artificial por medio de irradiación.
