El crecimiento de plántulas de la especie maderable P. saman (27 días después de la siembra; sin pastoreo) en un potrero de Hyparrhenia rufa en Rivas, Nicaragua (bosque tropical sub-húmedo, precipitación 1450 mm año exponente -1; temperatura media de 27 °C, elevación de 72 msnm) fue mayor con la siembra directa en el suelo (11.1 cm) que en estiércol (9.0 cm). Sin embargo el porcentaje de plantas dañadas por plagas fue mayor en el substrato suelo (34.4 vs 12.2 por ciento). Después de cuatro ciclos de pastoreo (60 días después de la siembra) se observó una mayor tasa de crecimiento de plantas de P. saman con el substrato estiércol (6 cm) que en suelo (3.4 cm) y una reducción significativa en los daños causada por pisoteo (17 vs 56 por ciento) y defoliación (0.4 por ciento vs 6.5 por ciento, respectivamente). Se concluye que el estiércol de ganado fue una herramienta eficaz para introducir árboles en potreros. |
