Summary, etc El presente documento titulado Caribe y Centroamérica: Perfil de la Industria Bananera se preparó con el objetivo de que sirva como breviario informativo para los señores Ministros asistentes el Encuentro. Se presenta en el mismo, un compendio de las principales estadísticas de la actividad bananera de los países de la región y su posicionamiento en los mercados internacionales, y los temas de acceso al mercado para el banano que se encuentran planteados en distintos foros internacionales. En materia tecnológica se identifican los principales mecanismos para la cooperación técnica y centros de investigación existentes en el continente americano. De igual manera, se reseña el Programa de Investigación y Desarrollo sobre el Banano, presentado por medio del Grupo Intergubernamental sobre Banano del Comité de Problemas de Productos Básicos de la FAO, para su financiamiento por el Fondo Común de la UNCTAD. El documento está ordenado en inglés y español de la siguiente forma: en el capítulo I se presenta el perfil de la industria bananera: 1) origen e importancia de la industria; 2) el mercado bananero mundial y sus segmentos; 3) destino de las exportaciones bananeras; 4) el acceso a los mercados bananeros; 5) ronda Uruguay del GATT; 6) foros de discusión y mecanismos de cooperación en materia bananera; y 7) mecanismos internacionales de cooperación científica y tecnológica. El capítulo II presenta un compendio estadístico y el capítulo III presenta el proyecto revisado del Programa de Investigación y Desarrollo sobre el Banano.<br/>
