Prinsen, J.H.
Potential of Albizia lebbek (Mimosaceae) a tropical fodder tree; a review of literature - 1986
45 ref. Sum. (En)
The paper tries to identify the importance of browse in the livestock industry of the World and in some ecological zones in particular: the Mediterranean Basin, the dry tropics of Africa, Northern America, Latin America, Australia. Goats can ingest twice as much dry matter per kg of liveweight as cattle. Therefore they can thrive on a pure browse diet, while cattle cannot. Feeding value of browse is examined. Plantation of fodder shrubs and trees as feed reserves is examined as part of a drough evasion strategy in arid and semi-arid zones. The main shrubs and trees reviewed are spineless cati, salt bushes, Acacia, Leucaena, Mesquites, etc. Planting techniques and cost of establishment are briefly overviewed. As a conclusion, the author stresses the need for a better cooperation between various specialists and agencies in order to plan and carry out sounder and better balanced development schemes based upon long term sustained productivity
