El documento expone que el objetivo de esta presentación es analizar con algún detenimiento los principales desafíos tecnológicos que serán necesario enfrentar para que la agricultura sea capaz de desempeñar efectivamente el papel que le corresponde en el nuevo esquema económico que ya comienza a perfilarse, tanto en el orden mundial como en los países de la Región. En la segunda sección de este documento se discuten brevemente las características de la nueva agricultura. La tercera sección analiza las dimensiones de equidad y sostenibilidad como condiciones necesarias de cualquier estrategia de desarrollo, mientras que la cuarta se ocupa del marco de oportunidades y limitantes de nivel internacional en que se deberán desenvolver las acciones que se emprendan. En la quinta sección se analizan los aspectos tecnológicos y los consiguientes desafíos de investigación y desarrollo de la nueva agricultura; finalmente, en la sexta se presentan algunos comentarios referidos a los aspectos institucionales que se deben tener en cuenta en este proceso. (MIBA) The document states that the objective of this presentation is to analyze in some detail the main technological challenges that will need to be faced in order for agriculture to be able to effectively play its rightful role in the new economic scheme that is already beginning to emerge, both in the world order as in the countries of the Region. The second section of this document briefly discusses the characteristics of the new agriculture. The third section analyzes the dimensions of equity and sustainability as necessary conditions of any development strategy, while the fourth deals with the framework of opportunities and limitations at the international level in which the actions to be undertaken must be carried out. The fifth section analyzes the technological aspects and the consequent research and development challenges of the new agriculture; finally, the sixth section presents some comments referring to the institutional aspects that must be taken into account in this process. (MY BA) This report assesses the performance of Guyana's agricultural sector over the last decade. Special emphasis is given to rural poverty issues in the context of economic policies and agricultural institutions. The document is divided into seven sections and an appendix containing recent data on the Guyanese economy. An overview of the country is presented in section I; macroeconomic performance and recent economic policies are considered in sections II and III, respectively; sections IV and V dealt with agricultural policies and recent trends in the agricultural sector, in an effort to discover the socio-economic factors which constrained agricultural development during the 1980s; section VI examines small-farm agriculture, its main features and the evolution of rural poverty; and the last section assesses the current status and scope of the country's agricultural institutions.
