Factors that influence the adoption, adaptation and knowledge sharing (among farmers) of agroforestry practices in the municipality of San Juan Opico, El Salvador were determined. Small farmers adopt agroforestry practices to meet firewood needs, to generate wood for local consumption/sale and for environmental benefits. Important factors that influence the adoption process include material incentives, technical assistance, land tenure, farm size and projected benefits. The principal adaptation observed was an increase in tree spacing to favor crop production. Knowledge sharing has taken place among farmers resulting in an incipient multiplier effect. Strategic inputs such as seedlings, nursery bags, seeds and technical assistance were found to be vital to sustain the adoption process.
